Danielle Haim’s Guitar Inspirations: A Journey Through Sound
Since their groundbreaking debut album, Days Are Gone, released in 2013, Haim has carved out a unique niche as innovative multi-instrumentalists, reshaping the landscape of rock music in the 2010s and beyond.
Recently,the trio celebrated a notable milestone by receiving their first Grammy nomination for “Best Rock Album,” marking them as the first all-female band to achieve this honor in the category’s history.
At the helm of the band, Danielle Haim showcases her versatility as the lead guitarist, co-producer, primary vocalist, and drummer. Her guitar work ranges from funky rhythmic patterns to electrifying classic rock solos, drawing inspiration from a diverse array of genres, including hip-hop and alternative rock.
Influences That Shaped Her Sound
In a recent conversation with Guitar World, Danielle shared, “Dr. Dre’s The Chronic 2001 was monumental for me. The way André 3000 from Outkast incorporates guitar in tracks like Prototype and Hey Ya!-those muted guitar lines were incredibly influential.”
She also expressed her admiration for Tom Verlaine, stating, “I adore his playing. Marquee Moon is one of my all-time favorite guitar solos. I can sing it from memory.” Classic rock figures prominently in her influences, with Danielle highlighting Joe walsh’s iconic riffs in “Life in the Fast Lane” as some of the most impressive guitar work ever. She also praises Mike Campbell for his rhythmic genius.
Paying Homage to Blues Legends
Among her greatest inspirations is the legendary blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt. Danielle remarked, “I believe Bonnie Raitt is an extraordinary player. Although I don’t play slide guitar, every time I watch her perform, I’m completely captivated. She’s a true genius on the guitar.”
Other notable influences include the iconic Prince,whom she considers “the most underrated guitarist,” and keith Richards. The band even sought out the Edge’s signature effects pedal to replicate the sound from U2’s Numb in their latest track, Now It’s Time, from the album I Quit.
Vintage Vibes and Instruments
Haim’s thankfulness for vintage sounds extends to their instruments as well. Este Haim, the band’s bassist, has shared her excitement about scoring her dream ’70s Fender Precision Bass on Craigslist at an unbeatable price.
