Introducing the Boden JC Djesse: jacob Collier’s Revolutionary Five-String Guitar
NAMM 2025: Strandberg, the Swedish innovator known for its ergonomic, headless guitars, has officially launched the Boden JC Djesse, a groundbreaking five-string signature model designed for the prodigious Jacob Collier. This eye-catching electric guitar, adorned in a vibrant yellow finish, has been in the works for several years, with Collier teasing an early prototype on his social media platforms as early as May 2023.
After generating significant buzz throughout 2024,the guitar was finally unveiled in July, following a wave of speculation. Now, it is available for purchase on Strandberg’s website, with a price tag of $2,995.
Explore the Six-String Option
For those who prefer a more traditional setup, a six-string variant is also on offer at the same price. Though, Collier encourages guitarists to embrace the five-string model, believing it will inspire a fresh approach to playing. “It’s a unique experience for guitar players to approach something without any rules,” he remarked about this unconventional instrument.
“I’ve handed the five-string to many curious musicians, and the first thing they try to do is adapt it to the shapes of a six-string guitar. It’s frequently enough a disaster! Watching them let go of their preconceived notions and rediscover their creativity is truly delightful,” Collier added.
A Natural Evolution for Collier
While a five-string guitar may seem unconventional to some, for Collier, it represents a natural progression from his early days of playing a four-string tenor acoustic tuned in fifths (G D A E). He has previously collaborated with Taylor Guitars to create a unique five-string acoustic that provided a richer low-end sound, utilizing an all-fifths tuning of D A E A D. This setup allows him to “cover more ground with fewer strings to cross.” That model was released to the market in October.
After attending one of Collier’s performances to witness the capabilities of their innovative designs, Strandberg’s founder, Ola Strandberg, was captivated by Collier’s five-string acoustic. This led to discussions about creating an electric version, resulting in a partnership that is nothing short of a match made in musical heaven.
Specifications That Impress
The specifications for the Boden JC Djesse are impressive and consistent across both the five-string and six-string models. It features a 25.5″ scale length, a chambered body, a solid maple top, and a roasted maple neck-thru EndurNeck design, complemented by a 24-fret ebonol fretboard. The guitar is equipped with a pair of passive Lace Alumitone humbuckers, ensuring a rich tonal palette.
The hardware is equally striking, with anodized components in blue, green, and red, including a locking EGS Rev7 bridge. A five-way switch allows for versatile tone options, including full humbucker and split tones. Premium features such as Luminlay inlays and stainless steel frets (Jescar 51100 and 57110 for the zero fret) further enhance its appeal.
Challenging the Norms
While the price point may deter some potential buyers, the Boden JC Djesse stands out as one of the most innovative guitar designs in recent years. It challenges traditional guitar norms and invites players to explore new sonic territories, even if it remains a niche offering.
“This unique model captures Jacob’s boundary-pushing musicality with its extended range and ergonomic design,” Ola Strandberg stated.
Collier himself expressed his admiration for Strandberg guitars, stating, “Everything about the Strandberg design appeals to me. They are visually stunning, unique, and lightweight, making them feel astonishing under the fingers.”
