What is the ZEQD-Pre?
The ZEQD-Pre pedal is designed to infuse your signal chain with the warmth and character of a tube amplifier.
This innovative collaboration between EarthQuaker devices and Dr Z Amplification features an EF86 pentode tube, paired with a versatile three-band EQ for precise sound shaping.
Its multiple output options allow for diverse applications, including a standard jack for conventional setups, an XLR direct output with switchable cabinet emulation for connecting to mixers or audio interfaces, and a headphone output that also features cabinet emulation.
In addition to the standard bypass footswitch,a secondary footswitch allows you to bypass the three-band EQ,providing a full-range boost controlled by the Boost knob.

Build Quality, Usability, and Sound
The EF86 tube does not inherently produce drive, but within this pedal, it creates a spacious sound with remarkable clarity and dynamic responsiveness, all enhanced by the sophisticated EQ that maintains its integrity.
Turning the Level knob past the nine o’clock position provides a gain boost to drive an amplifier’s front end, with an additional kick available via the boost footswitch when needed.
When used without an amplifier, the pedal can effectively serve as the final piece in a pedalboard, utilizing the XLR output to connect directly to a front-of-house system or FRFR speaker cab, provided you have the necessary pedals to achieve your desired tone. It can also act as a tone enhancer before or after a digital modeller.
The ZEQD-Pre is also an excellent choice for practice sessions, as the headphone output with speaker simulation provides a rich sound that inspires you to play.
Additionally, it serves as a fantastic DI box for recording clean guitar tones. We achieved impressive results using a Stratocaster plugged directly into the XLR output (with speaker simulation engaged) connected to an audio interface, applying compression as a plugin on the DAW recording track.
Final Thoughts
Final Rating: ★★★★
While the price tag of nearly $400 might appear excessive for what some might consider a simple gadget, the ZEQD-Pre stands out as a highly functional professional tool with a multitude of applications for guitarists.
Guitar World Review: This pedal serves as both a tone-shaper and a gain booster, seamlessly integrating into various signal chains, making it an essential tool for enhancing your sound.
