Reviving a Classic: The Chelsea Low End Fuzz Driver by EarthQuaker Devices
In an exciting collaboration, EarthQuaker Devices has partnered with LCD Soundsystem to transform a beloved vintage fuzz pedal, cherished by bassist James murphy, into a commercially available model. This means that the well-worn stompbox can finally take a well-deserved rest.
Introducing the Chelsea Low End Fuzz Driver
The outcome of this partnership is the Chelsea Low End Fuzz Driver, meticulously crafted to capture the unique characteristics that have turned a once-standard pedal into a sonic powerhouse. This pedal has played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s signature gritty sound across multiple albums.
Murphy acquired this pedal in the late 1980s, and by the time it became a staple in the band’s electronic rock repertoire, it had certainly seen better days. However, those wear-and-tear experiences only enhanced its charm.
“It’s been battered and patched up,” notes EQD. “It appears fragile, yet it consistently delivers a massive sound. It’s too remarkable to retire, but it’s also too weary to continue.”
From Vintage to Modern
Following a thorough examination and reproduction process, the new pedal is named after the guitar shop where Murphy made his purchase in 1989. the Chelsea features three straightforward controls: Level, Tone, and Sustain, along with an additional Tone On/Off mini-switch. Most importantly, this new version “captures all the quirks of the original without the risk of total breakdown.”
As was to be expected, EQD claims that the Chelsea covers a broader tonal range, capable of producing everything from a subtle overdrive to a rich, full-bodied distortion. The pedal is celebrated for its unique blend of “clarity and blissful grit,” which defines its sound.
Watch On
The Tone On/Off switch allows users to fully bypass the Tone control, unlocking “a whole new realm of midrange grit.” When deactivated, expect a direct attack with an abundance of natural distortion, while engaging it provides a more nuanced sound.
Much like its well-worn predecessor—a vintage Big Muff that Murphy relied on for his iconic fuzz sound—the new Chelsea can “handle virtually anything you throw at it.”
And guitarists, don’t worry! While this pedal is primarily designed for bass, it also shines when paired with electric guitars, delivering an equally impressive performance.
A quick look at the specifications reveals an all-analog signal path, true bypass, and electronic relay-based switching. Everything about this pedal exudes vintage vibes without the hefty price tag or the wear-and-tear associated with older models.
Each Chelsea unit is handcrafted in akron, Ohio, and comes with a lifetime warranty.
the Chelsea Low End Fuzz Driver is now available for $179.
