Kirk Hammett Unveils a Treasure Trove of Riffs for Metallica’s Upcoming Album
Kirk Hammett, the iconic guitarist of Metallica, has revealed that the band is set to embark on their next album project following the conclusion of their current tour in November. With an notable collection of riffs already in hand,Hammett is eager to dive into the creative process for the successor to their 2023 album,72 Seasons.
“I’ve got 767 fresh riffs ready for the next album,” hammett shared with Rolling Stone, highlighting the sheer volume of material he has amassed.
“It’s quite a challenge to sift through all this material,” he admitted. “I’m the one who has to manage it all, adn it feels overwhelming.”
Hammett’s riffs have been the backbone of numerous Metallica hits. In a 2020 interview with Guitar Player, he credited his inspiration to legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Michael Schenker, along with lesser-known tracks from bands like Judas Priest and Santana.
As Metallica continues their tour for 72 Seasons, Hammett has ample time to refine his riffs and generate new ideas. “I don’t expect us to start recording the next album for at least another year since we still have to complete our tour,” he explained. “After we finish this leg and visit places like Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, we’ll take a brief break before jumping back into the studio.”

Along with Metallica’s forthcoming album,Hammett is also working on his first full-length solo project, following his 2022 EP,Portals. “I’m actively gathering ideas for my solo album,” he stated. “It’s going to blend various musical styles.”
“I find myself writing classical progressions one moment, then shifting to heavier riffs, and even exploring funk influences,” he elaborated. “This time around, there will definitely be vocals,as the songs I’ve written call for them.”
while it’s still early to determine who will lend their voice to his new material, Hammett has an intriguing instrumental piece titled “The Mysterion” that draws inspiration from ancient Greek texts. “It’s engaging to think that I wouldn’t have created this piece if I hadn’t started reading those texts,” he remarked.
hammett also hinted at the possibility of Metallica revisiting their controversial late ’90s albums, Load and Reload. “Who knows? We might decide to revisit the ’90s,” he mused. “it could be an fascinating idea!”
Despite the initial backlash these albums received, Hammett has noticed a shift in fan sentiment. “When Load and Reload were released, they faced a lot of criticism. Though, I now meet fans who have come to appreciate that era. When we play ‘Fuel,’ the crowd goes wild, and ‘Until It sleeps’ has everyone singing along.”

Reflecting on his songwriting process, Hammett hopes to avoid past mistakes, particularly the incident in 2014 when he lost his phone containing 250 musical ideas while at Copenhagen Airport. At that time, Metallica was working on Hardwired…to Self-Destruct, and the loss left him with nothing to contribute. “I was devastated. I didn’t have a backup,” he recalled. “I can only remember about eight of those riffs now.”
In other news, Hammett recently announced a new book in collaboration with gibson Publishing. Titled The collection: Kirk Hammett, this 400-page volume showcases around 65 guitars from his personal collection, including the legendary “Greeny” Gibson Les Paul Standard, previously owned by Peter Green and Gary Moore, along with his 1979 Gibson Flying V.
