Exploring the Magic of Open G Tuning: Charlie Starr’s Slide Guitar Insights
In my previous article, I shared how the open G tuning (D, G, D, G, B, D from low to high) has profoundly influenced my journey as a guitarist, helping me carve out a distinctive musical identity through unique chord progressions and slide guitar techniques. I demonstrated this by breaking down the intro and main riff of Blackberry Smoke’s track, Ain’t Much Left of Me.
This time, I want to delve deeper into the advantages of open G tuning by showcasing additional sections of the song, particularly the slide guitar solo.
Verse Structure and Chord Progressions
The verse is characterized by rhythmic chord strikes on G, transitioning to F/C and C, followed by G to F/G and C/E, all punctuated by powerful band accents. This sequence is repeated twice, leading seamlessly into the chorus.

Chorus Breakdown
As illustrated in Figure 1,the chorus begins with a V chord,D,embellished in a “Keith Richards” style,accentuating G/D. The second bar shifts to Am7, requiring the 5th string to be fretted at the 2nd fret to produce the low A root note. The progression continues with bars 3 and 4 moving from G to D.
Bars 5 through 9 conclude the chorus, starting with sustained C and D chords before returning to the intro figure: Fsus2/G – C/G – G, as shown in bar 9.
Creating a Unique Solo Section
For the solo section, I decided to step outside the “home” key of G and introduce a repeating chord progression of F7 to G7 for improvisation, as detailed in Figure 2.

Open G tuning alters the chord shapes,which is part of its charm,offering a plethora of chord and riff options that standard tuning simply cannot provide. This unique tuning fosters creativity in crafting rhythm parts for solos.
Slide Solo Insights
Figure 3 showcases the slide solo: in bars 1-6, the chords alternate between F7 and G7. Following the F7 in bar 7, bar 8 transitions to D.

The solo lines I create are closely tied to the alternating chords: for the F7, I incorporate licks centered around an F major triad (F, A, C), while for G7, I focus on licks derived from a G major triad (G, B, D). This triadic arpeggiation technique forges a strong link between the improvised solo and the underlying chords.
Bar 8 marks the conclusion of the solo, played over D, and bar 9 brings us back to the arpeggiated figures introduced in the intro. we then cycle through the verse, chorus, and outro sections once more.
