Alex Lifeson Unveils Exciting Gear for Rush’s Upcoming Tour
As Rush gears up for their highly anticipated return to the stage next month, guitarist Alex Lifeson has shared some intriguing details about his touring setup, including a replica of Kirk Hammett’s iconic Greeny guitar.
Fifty Something Tour Kicks Off
Lifeson, alongside bassist Geddy Lee adn former Jeff Beck drummer Anika Nilles, will launch the Fifty Something tour in Los Angeles on June 7. This marks a significant moment for the band, as it will be their first tour as the passing of legendary drummer Neil Peart in 2020.
A New Chapter for Lifeson
After a triumphant soft-launch at the Juno Awards, Lifeson is eager to showcase some fresh instruments on stage. “Kirk Hammett gifted me one of his Greenys,” he revealed in the latest issue of Guitar World. “It’s a wild Les Paul, and the craftsmanship from the Gibson Custom Shop is truly remarkable. The relic work is stunning, and it sounds phenomenal.”
The Legacy of Greeny
The Greeny Les Paul has a storied history, originally owned by Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green. After Green stepped away from the music scene in 1970, he entrusted the guitar to Gary Moore. Following Moore’s passing, Hammett acquired it for a surprisingly reasonable price, adding to it’s legendary status.
Since then, numerous reissues have emerged, with Biffy Clyro’s Simon Neil reportedly spending $20,000 on a Custom Shop version.
Changes in Lifeson’s Guitar Arsenal
In addition to the Greeny, Lifeson is making other adjustments to his guitar collection. “I no longer have my original ES-355, but I’ll be bringing one of the reissues on tour,” he noted. There’s also buzz about a new Epiphone reissue of the same model.

“I’m still expanding my collection,” Lifeson added. “I had around 23 guitars on the last tour, and I’m aiming for about 15 or 16 this time.”
Geddy Lee’s Bass Collection
Lee chimed in about his own gear, stating, “Last tour, I had 27 vintage basses. I’m not sure I’ll use that many this time, but I’ve developed a fondness for my stunning ’62 Jazz Bass, which I plan to feature in several songs.I also have a couple of classic Rickenbackers that I’m excited to bring along.”

“I’ve also got some Hofners and Thunderbird basses that I’m really excited about. I plan to incorporate around 10 to 15 instruments into the setlist,” he shared.
Reunion Sparks New Energy
The band credits their performance at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert as a catalyst for their reunion.Though, Lee expressed discomfort with the number of drummers who sought to fill Peart’s shoes after his passing, calling it “distasteful.”
