The Harmony Bobkat: The Unsung Hero Behind St. Vincent’s Signature Sound
Annie Clark, widely recognized as St. Vincent, has become synonymous with the stylish allure of her Ernie Ball music man guitar series. Yet, the inspiration for this iconic model can be traced back to a lesser-known gem—the Harmony Bobkat, a guitar that Clark has significantly helped to revive in popularity.
discovering the Bobkat
Clark’s journey with the Harmony Bobkat began while she was performing alongside Sufjan Stevens. “His guitarist urged me to try out these Harmony Bobkats because they’re incredibly lightweight,” she recalls in an interview with Reverb. At that time, these guitars were still quite affordable, making them an attractive option for musicians.
A Brief History of the Harmony Bobkat
Initially launched as the Silhouette in 1963, the Harmony Bobkat was rebranded in 1968. Variants of the Bobkat, such as the well-known 1477 model, were also marketed under the Silvertone name adn sold at Sears stores across the United States.
The allure of the Bobkat’s sound
Equipped with high-output DeArmond-designed gold foil pickups, the Bobkat produces a distinctive tone characterized by bright, clear highs and robust lows, making its pickups highly coveted among guitar enthusiasts.
“The first one I encountered was at Emerald City Guitars in Seattle. I was instantly drawn to the gold foil pickups and the guitar’s lightweight feel,” Clark shares. “I also loved the whammy bar.”
A Collector’s Passion
Clark’s captivation with the Bobkat quickly escalated. “whenever I spotted one, regardless of its condition, I woudl buy it,” she admits. Her quest for these guitars led her to scour guitar shows, hoping to expand her collection.
“At the Dallas Guitar Show, I purchased every Harmony Bobkat I could find.I was the only attendee not sporting a Tommy Bahama shirt. My love for these guitars is genuine,” she adds with a smile.
Designing Her Signature Model
When it came time to create her own signature guitar, it was only natural that it would be heavily influenced by the Bobkat, albeit with some essential enhancements. “I drew a lot of inspiration from the Harmony Bobkat,” she explains. “My model captures its essence, but with a crucial upgrade: when you dive bomb on the whammy bar,it stays in tune. That was a notable issue with the original Bobkats, which were designed as student guitars in the ’50s and ’60s and weren’t built to withstand aggressive playing.”
Clark elaborates, “For my signature series, I wanted a whammy bar that could handle intense dive bombs while maintaining tuning stability. With the Harmony Bobkat, one dive bomb would throw it out of tune due to the wooden bridge shifting.”
Recent Achievements
This month, St. vincent celebrated a remarkable achievement, winning three Grammy Awards for her self-produced seventh studio album, All Born Screaming, which featured collaborations with members of the Foo Fighters.
